2021 Legislative Update: Week 6

We have just a few days left in this year's legislative session, with a lot of bills still to pass. I am grateful for my constituents' involvement, including the town hall that we had last week. I wanted to take a moment and relay some information back to you about what has happened this past week.

With just one week left, I want to encourage you to reach out if you have any last-minute thoughts or concerns on legislation being worked on in the Utah House of Representatives.

Thank you,
Representative Cory Maloy
House District 6

Bill Updates

Many of my bills have already been passed into law or are on track to be signed by the governor. Many of these bills were crafted through input from you and our neighbors. I wanted to let you know where a few of my bills are in the legislative process.
  • HB 76, Firearm Preemption Amendments, passed both the committee and the House floor this week. This bill will protect Utah's 2nd Amendment rights by asserting the state's constitutional role in regulating firearms and preventing enforcement of federal laws or ordinances that are more restrictive than state law.
  • HB 143, Driver's License Amendments, passed the Senate today. This bill will now go to the governor for his signature to become law.

Putting Money Back in the Hands of Deserving Utahns

The Utah State Legislature presented legislation that will provide approximately $100 million in tax relief to Utah citizens. Though Utah’s economy is in an advantageous position compared to other states, many Utahns are struggling, and lawmakers want to provide tax relief where it will make the biggest difference. Three bills, S.B. 153, S.B. 11, and H.B. 86, target families, veterans, and elderly citizens and further boost Utah’s economic success.

Executive Appropriation Committee Recommends Historic Utah State Budget

The Executive Appropriations Committee (EAC) finalized recommendations for the Fiscal Year 2021-22 budget. The recommendations include increased funding for education, healthcare, housing, infrastructure and transportation, and a significant tax cut.

The EAC budget recommendation now advances to the full Legislature for consideration before the session closes March 5. The 2022 fiscal year begins July 1. Read the full press release here

Concurrent Resolution Honoring the 125th Anniversary of the First Utah Legislative Session

On January 4, 1896, Utah became the 45th state to be admitted to the Union. A few days later, on January 7, the first legislative session convened. The first legislature was made up of 18 members in the Senate and 45 members in the House and was tasked with designing a new community and government. Read HCR 16 here.
