2023 Legislative Update: Week Three

Friends and Neighbors,

The third week of the session has ended. This past week was water week. We had many great discussions on preserving, conserving, and optimizing Utah's water. We have been working on a number of bills to address our ongoing drought and to address the shrinking Great Salt Lake, as well as the needs of our other rivers, streams, and lakes, including Utah Lake.

Bill Spotlights

  • This week I presented H.B. 146 Sex Offender Restricted Area Amendments to the Senate Judiciary Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Standing Committee. Lehi Chief of Police Darren Paul joined me in support of this bill. The bill passed through the committee and will now be voted on by the Utah Senate
  • I presented S.B. 12 Hearing Instrument Specialist Licensing Amendments on the House Floor this past week (Pictured below). This bill has passed the Utah House and Senate and will no be signed into law by Governor Cox. 

Water Week

This week, the legislature celebrated Water Week. My colleagues and I are committed to passing policies that will increase water capacity, expand conservation efforts, prepare for future water needs, and enhance outreach efforts. In addition to significant funding, the following bills are top priorities for the House and Senate:

School Safety Bills

As tragic events across the country in recent years have made clear, we cannot afford to be complacent about the safety of our schools. This week, the House Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Committee heard five bills that address the hardening of schools, bullying, truancy, juvenile justice, and threat protocol. Click here to learn more.

Visiting With The American Cancer Association

Students from BYU, a part of the American Cancer Association, visited us at the capitol. It was great to connect with them.
