2023 Legislative Update: Week Two

Friends and Neighbors,

The second week of the 2023 Legislative Session has officially come to a close. It's been an eventful week at the Capitol as we've continued to meet in our committees and discuss important legislation that will help Utah moving forward.

Continue reading for some specific information that we've been working on. Thank you to all that have reached out with your comments and
questions so far. As always, if you have any questions or comments, please reach out. You can reach me directly at corymaloy@le.utah.gov.

Thank you,
Representative Cory Maloy
House District 52

Bill Spotlights

This week, I would like to highlight two bills.
  • H.B. 146 Sex Offender Restricted Area Amendments. I presented this bill with Lehi Police Chief Darren Paul (pictured below). This bill restricts an offender on the sex and kidnap offender registry from entering a private or homeowners' association swimming pool, park, or playground. This bill is the product of many concerned constituents and citizens and will close a loophole that will keep our kids safe from those seeking to do them harm and give law enforcement more guidance on how to deal with
calls they receive of potential violations.
  • H.B. 215 has passed the Utah House and Senate. This bill was the source of a lot of discussion and controversy. The majority of people I heard from and spoke with in our district favored this bill. Since its passage, I have received nearly 200 emails thanking me for my vote. This bill will do a lot of good for our students and teachers.

Meeting With Students From Belmont Elementary

Some awesome students came to visit the Capitol this week, and I was happy to give them a quick lesson on what we do. These kids asked some great questions! Thank you Belmont Elementary for allowing me to take a minute of your time.

20 Years Together!

This past Wednesday, my wife and I celebrated our 20th anniversary. Our anniversary always happens during the Legislative Session, which makes it a little tricky to celebrate! She came and spent the day with me at the Capitol, and we had a great day.

Floor Time With Utah County GOP Vice Chair

Mac Sims, Vice Chair of the Utah County Republican Party, joined me on the House floor. It is always great having friends and neighbors join me at the Capitol.

General Session of the 65th Legislature

This session continues to be productive. We are working hard and having productive debates. You can follow along with the process by viewing our weekly agendas here
