Bill Updates

Utah has some of the most skilled and talented healthcare workers in the entire country. I am especially grateful and fortunate for the professionalism and care the nurses, neurosurgeon, physicians assistants, doctors and technicians demonstrated when I recently needed brain surgery.

Utah is experiencing a significant shortage of healthcare providers. We have three medical schools in the state that will see about 469 graduating students each year. Of those students, 86% will leave the state to complete their residences, and unfortunately, most don't come back. However, 90% percent of students would stay in Utah if they had opportunities to complete their medical degrees and residencies here.

This past week, my signature bill, H.B. 295, Physician Workforce Amendments, passed unanimously in the Utah House. This bill provides grant money for participating institutions to start new medical residencies and expand existing residencies to rural and small community hospitals. It is designed to give medical students the opportunity to complete residencies in the state, ultimately making it easier for them to stay and practice in Utah. In the coming week, H.B. 295 will be presented in the Utah Senate.

Highlights

In relation to H.B. 295, this past week was Noorda-COM day at the Capitol. I was pleased to have the opportunity to speak with members of the inaugural class of the Noorda College of Osteopathic Medicine. Britney Herral, who is the president of Noorrda-COM's student government association joined me on the House floor.

Utah Highway Patrol

This week, we had the great opportunity to recognize the Utah Highway Patrol and their efforts in keeping our state and the Utah Capitol safe. I appreciate their time, dedication, and commitment to keeping Utahns and our great communities safe.

Inflation

The amount of federal spending we have seen over the past couple of years has been concerning to the citizens of Utah. We are experiencing the impact that excessive spending has on inflation. At the Legislature, we are working hard to minimize the impacts of inflation and ensure that the excess revenue is spent carefully. Watch this short video to learn more

2022 Revenue Numbers

Revenue numbers for state fiscal year (FY) 2022-23 were released this week by the Governor’s Office, Utah Senate, and House of Representatives. Utah leads the nation in economic performance and continues to exceed expectations. Although Utah’s economy is strong, there are significant factors, including federal stimulus wind down, that may dampen revenue gains. Click here to view the full report.
