2023 Legislative Update: Week Four

Friends and Neighbors,

We have officially passed the halfway point in the session. There are now only three weeks left in the session. During that time, I am excited to continue working with my colleagues to pass legislation that will benefit our community and Utah.

As always, if you have any questions or comments, please reach out. You can reach me directly at corymaloy@le.utah.gov.

Thank you,
Representative Cory Maloy
House District 52

Bill Spotlight

  • H.B. 146 Sex Offender Restricted Area Amendments has passed the Utah House and Utah Senate. This bill will now go to Governor Cox to sign into law. I am happy to see this bill making its way through the process. This bill will add further protections for our children, and I am happy to provide more protections for our community.
  • H.B. 264 Certified Nursing Assistants Amendments passed the Utah House and will soon be introduced into the Utah Senate. This bill allows a certified nurse aide to obtain experience at a healthcare facility that is designated by the Division of Health and Human Services.

Business and Labor Committee Update

In our Business and Labor committee this week, we had the opportunity to hear a bill put forth by Representative Michael Peterson. H.B. 228 Unprofessional Conduct Amendments prioritizes the care of children seeking to find their identity. This bill ensures that qualified mental health professionals are able to speak freely to those experiencing questions and issues. This bill had the potential to be very divisive, yet Rep. Peterson was able to bring all parties together who worked very closely to develop what I consider a historic bill.

This bill is the result of great efforts from groups on both sides of the political spectrum. The bill received unanimous votes in committee and in the House. It was a wonderful experience seeing the work that went into this bill that will benefit our kids as well as our counselors and therapists who can help and care for them.

Guiding Our Growth

Utah is one of the fastest-growing states in the nation. Our area is no stranger to this growth. As we continue to grow, we need to ensure our identity is being preserved. We must take a proactive approach to preserve what we love about our communities. I want to invite you to a statewide conversation on how best to guide our ongoing growth. Share your opinions here: guidingourgrowth.utah.gov.

Receiving An Award

I am thankful for the support and the award I received from the cultural sector during Cultural Industry Day. I enjoy supporting the arts and cultural sector both in our community and statewide.

Safe, Reliable, and Affordable Energy

Utah’s all-of-the-above energy policy has powered decades of prosperity by providing some of the most reliable and affordable energy in the country. I’m committed to pushing back on federal regulatory overreach that threatens our ability to provide power to our state. I look forward to voting for the following bills, which strive to safeguard Utah’s ability to provide safe, reliable, and affordable power.
