2023 Legislative Update: Week One

Friends and Neighbors,

This is Representative Cory Maloy. The first week of the 2023 Legislative Session has officially come to a close. It's great to be back at the Capitol doing the people's work. For the next forty-five days, you can look forward to receiving a weekly newsletter from me as well as a video update.

As a reminder, keep an eye out for my legislative town hall announcement. The town hall is a great opportunity to come and ask questions about legislation and what is happening at the legislature. As always, if you have any questions or comments, please reach out. You can reach me directly at corymaloy@le.utah.gov.

Thank you,
Representative Cory Maloy
House District 52

Bill Updates

We have already made significant progress on some of the bills I am sponsoring. H.B. 14, 15, and 20 have all passed through the Utah House and will now be voted on by the Utah Senate.

General Session of the 65th Legislature

This session has already proven to be productive. We are working hard and having productive debates. You can follow along with the process by viewing our weekly agendas here

The Utah Way Together

Each year, the majority caucus looks at the most pressing issues in Utah. This year, we have identified the following as our policy priorities for this session:

  • Stewardship: Safeguarding our natural resources
  • Affordability: Keeping Utah affordable
  • Investment: Laying the foundation for our future

You can learn more about these legislative priorities and what they mean for Utah here

H.B. 215 Update

H.B. 215 recently passed out of the Utah House and will now be voted on by the Utah Senate. I wanted to tell you a bit about this bill and why I voted in favor.

H.B. 215 provides more money directly to teachers. This bill provides the most significant teacher pay raise in the state's history. 42% of Utah teachers leave the profession within their first five years. We need to do something about this, and H.B. 215 is a good start. If you have any other questions about this bill, please don't hesitate to reach out.

State of the State

On Thursday, I attended Governor Cox's State of the State. He focused on policies to help families and the next generation of Utahns. I was joined by Edward Howlett, who lives in Lehi and attends Willow Creek Middle School.

I look forward to working hard with my colleagues to pass good policies that will benefit Edward and the next generation.
